Not since the year 2000 has there been a month in the US with more technology stock IPOs than we saw in May of 2011. The corporate networking site LinkedIn was valued at $US4.3 billion with annual profit in 2010 only just topping $15 million. That’s a staggering amount of confidence in the value of a technology stock that has everyone excited.
It is now expected that Facebook will list sometime in the next 12 months, and with private equity buy ins valuing the company at somewhere between $50 and $100 billion, conservative investors are nervous that we may not have quite learned what we should have from the dot com crash of 2001.
The problem is that the valuations seem to be based on potential rather than performance. Facebook has only recently become profitable, but we know that it is by far the most popular site in the world and people spend more time on the homepage than on any other homepage. To advertisers, Facebook represents a goldmine.
LinkedIn doesn’t have the same ‘stickyness’ to it, but there is no doubt that it is becoming a force on its own. The site is becoming something of a resume sharing site, with profiles that were originally created from web spiders finally being reclaimed by their owners.
One things for sure, these technology sites have proven themselves where the dot com failures haven’t. Whether or not we might be overvaluing their potential return, only time will tell.

The National Broadband Network, widely touted as the shot in the arm that small business in Australia needs, has passed another milestone in its bid to get up and running.

Telstra has inked a deal giving the NBN access to its network, customers and its infrastructure. This was considered a key step in getting the NBN up and running, and negotiations on price have been ongoing for some time now.

The NBN is Labors lovechild and has been widely criticized as reckless spending by Tony Abbott, who will almost certainly become the next Prime Minister. Gillard is keen to see it through before she gets booted, and it’s unlikely that it will be rolled back even when the Liberal Party is returned to power.

The National Broadband Network will speed up internet access and will undoubtedly benefit small business and encourage more global business activity. However some have argued that the $50b price tag is a bit too much to pay in this current economic climate.
